Fishing around Dauphin Island is firing on all cylinders as we roll into July. Red snapper season is in full swing, and the bite has been strong over the reefs and wrecks. Most anglers are heading out early to take advantage of calm mornings and steady action. Snapper in the 10-15 lb range are being caught regularly on live cigar minnows and cut bait. For those venturing out a little farther, mingos (vermillion snapper) and triggerfish are also showing up in solid numbers. Inshore, the speckled trout bite continues to produce. Anglers working the grass flats and around the bridges during early morning or late evening are landing keeper-sized trout on topwater plugs, popping corks, and soft plastics. The bite has been best around moving tides, and live shrimp has been a game changer when conditions get tough. Redfish are cruising the edges of oyster beds and marsh cuts, with some oversized bulls making surprise appearances near the passes. Shark fishing near the beaches and around the oil rigs has been picking up steam, especially for those targeting them at night. Blacktips and spinners are most common, but a few bull sharks have been reported as well. With warm Gulf temps and baitfish moving through, now’s a great time to get in on the summer action across the island. Whether you’re heading offshore or staying close to the bay, there’s no shortage of opportunities on the line.
